Description

Secondary clarifier sized by the limiting solids flux theory. Zone settling velocity by the Vesilind equation:

v=v0e−KCv = v_0 e^{-K C}

v0v_0 and KK are taken from the settleability class (von Sperling and Fröes) unless given:

ClassSVI (mL/g)v0v_0 (m/h)KK (m³/kg)
Very good0-5010.00.27
Good50-1009.00.35
Medium100-2008.60.50
Poor200-3006.20.67
Very poor300-4005.60.73

Area for clarification:

Acl=Qmaxv0e−KXA_{cl} = \frac{Q_{max}}{v_0 e^{-K X}}

Area for thickening, where uu is the underflow velocity at which the limiting flux carries the applied load (Q+Qr)X(Q + Q_r) X to the bottom:

Aad=QruA_{ad} = \frac{Q_r}{u}

The design area is the larger of the two, checked at average and peak flow with the return flow constant at Qr=RQQ_r = R Q.

The return sludge ratio RR is either given or obtained from the return sludge concentration XrX_r:

R=XXr−XR = \frac{X}{X_r - X}

Results include the hydraulic and solids loading rates, the return sludge concentration by mass balance and the limiting underflow concentration for the design area.
